Child & Adolescent Therapy

Children and adolescents face challenges that can be profoundly stressful and seriously impact their development, and they process those experiences differently than adults do. Our child and adolescent therapists incorporate play, behavioral, art, and expressive art therapy alongside talk therapy, meeting kids where they are developmentally rather than expecting them to process feelings the way an adult would.

Who Child & Adolescent Therapy Can Help

  • Bullying

  • The impact of a family member's addiction

  • Autism spectrum-related concerns

  • Anxiety

  • Grief

  • Acting out at home or at school

  • Trauma, including physical or sexual trauma, or exposure to violence

  • Academic challenges

  • Depression

  • Difficulty with social skills or peer relationships

  • Attachment difficulties

We believe therapy can be a valuable tool for helping young people navigate their feelings and grow into their most capable, confident selves.

Our Approach

We draw on mindfulness-based principles alongside developmentally appropriate approaches, including play therapy, behavioral therapy, and art and expressive therapy, tailored to your child's age and needs. Because kids don't exist in isolation, we involve the family throughout treatment where appropriate, through conjoint family sessions and parent education, so progress made in the therapy room carries over at home.

For teachers, school counselors, and pediatricians referring a student or patient, we're glad to coordinate with you as part of a child's care team where appropriate and with proper consent. For Referring Providers →

What to Expect

Your first step is a brief consultation to talk through what's going on with your child and find the therapist who's the right fit. From there, sessions are typically held weekly, in person at our Hillcrest or Carmel Valley office, with modality and pace adjusted as your child grows and their needs change.

Before your first session, see our New Patient Information & FAQ and Notice of Privacy Practices.
